It’s been a double celebration for the Cats Protection shop at the heart of St John’s, Worcester.

In February 2009, shop manager Fran Holder and her team of volunteers celebrated three years in business – and marked it by renewing the lease for the next three years.

How it all began

In February 2006 Margaret Kimberley, the branch’s vice chair and home checker, together with a core of volunteers, realised a long-term ambition to open the shop in order to raise much-needed funds for the branch.

For some time Margaret had been looking for the right premises to come along and as soon as she saw the location of the shop she knew it was ideal. It was in a prime spot at the heart of a good community and it is now an important focal point for the branch, with all the money raised going towards the cost of looking after the cats in the branch’s care.

You’ll see some of the cats in our care on posters in the shop window and we can provide information on a whole host of cat-related issues and more about the work of the branch.

Meet the boss!

Fran Holder is the ever-smiling, friendly face who manages the shop. She travels the daily hour-anda-half round trip from her home in Evesham and it’s a job she loves with a passion.

She said: “I enjoy working in the shop as it’s always different.

It’s like Christmas every day as you don’t know what donations you may get. I have always had a career in retail but to be able to combine that with raising money for cats, well it’s my ideal job. I’m looking forward to continuing our success - we achieve a lot for a small shop!”

What we sell

There’s a wide-range of good quality items on offer all year round.

Clothing, bric a brac, books, CDs and videos are all on offer at reasonable prices - and there’s plenty of bargains to be had.

Cat food can be dropped off and we try and keep the shop up to date and fashionable all year round.

Who works there

We have a friendly team of volunteers who help out, with ages ranging from 20 to 80 years old. Currently 20 volunteers help in the shop, and their efforts make the shop the success it is.

Fran said: “My team of volunteers are key to the shop running well. They put new stock out, serve customers and travel from across Worcestershire to help out.” Volunteers usually work a three-hour shift, either from 10am to 1pm or 1pm to 4pm.

The work is varied and there’s always lots to do with new stock arriving daily. The main areas of work are sorting out donations, steaming clothes for sale, serving customers and keeping the shop clean and tidy.

Fran added: “We’re always looking for new people to help.  It’s a really relaxed atmosphere to work in and no day is the same. Experience isn’t necessary so if you’re interested, give us a call at the shop on 01905 426748.”

How to find us

You can find us in St John’s, Worcester - a good location with many other shops and services around.

Fran said: “We’re very lucky that we have a good customer base and a lot of people shop with us and support us.

Lots of people comment on how well presented the shop is.” We are open 10am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday. Click here for a map and directions.

Your donations they're always welcome

Donations are always accepted and appreciated - in fact we rely on them to keep the shop open. Fran said: “We’re always in need of good quality, clean saleable items. We aren’t able to sell furniture or electrical items due to health and safety regulations but we always need clothing, jewellery, books and bric a brac. Pop in and see for yourself - we’d be glad to see you!”
